The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a framework from birth to five years within all nurseries and reception classes. The EYFS is made up of six areas of Learning and Development. All areas of Learning and Development are connected to one another and are equally important. All areas of Learning and Development are underpinned by the principles of the EYFS.
The areas of Learning and Development are:
The six areas of Learning and Development together make up the skills, knowledge and experiences appropriate for babies and children as they grow, learn and develop.
Although these are presented as separate areas, it is important to remember that for children everything links and nothing is compartmentalised.
Through observation and planning we aim to ensure that children’s learning and development occur as an outcome of their individual interests and abilities and that planning for learning and development takes account of these.
We maintain ongoing observations and progress record books, which parents/carers are welcome to see at any time. Evidence for these assessments are collected in a number of ways such as talking with parent/carer, formal and informal observations, photographs, pieces of work, setting challenges, questioning etc. Using this information helps us to understand the developmental stage, needs and interests of each child.
