Balsall Heath City Farm

The Farm began in 1970 with just a few chickens to provide local inner city families with access to animals they would otherwise not see. Since then it has constantly expanded to become the environmental education resource which it is today. It is home to a varied selection of sheep, goats, rabbits, ducks, geese, turkeys and cats.

Visitors are welcome to come and see the sheep, goats and other animals. Groups with special needs and the very young and elderly are especially welcome to visit or to participate in helping with the Farm upkeep. The whole farm area has wheelchair access.

Learning

Educational visits are available for nurseries and school groups during term time, by appointment. There is a Farm classroom available (for a small charge). Sessions are appropriate for the full age range, from reception classes to Year 6. Children can take part in “animal awareness” sessions where they learn about the animals through touch and observation or discover the origins, characteristics and uses of animals to man. Teachers are welcome to discuss any special teaching requirements.

Holidays

During the school holidays the Farm is open to all local residents and children who participate in the Venture playscheme.
