Reunion by Danny Ryan MBE and Friends attracts 800 people

The Heathan reported in the last edition of a major reunion being planned for the people who lived, worked or grew up in Balsall Heath / Sparkbrook in the late 60s, 70s and 80s. On Friday 13th October, over 800 people packed into the Irish Club in Deritend to celebrate the first ever reunion of its kind.

Danny Ryan one of the organisers, when contacted recently said ‘The whole idea behind myself and my friends organising this event was to bring people together for a happy occasion and for people to reminisce and enjoy each others company, especially those who had not seen each other for in some cases over 20 years”.

“My appreciation goes out to the friends who helped me organise this event, Peter Scanlon, Kojie Ogbeide, Barry Hamill and Paul Yafay (Abdullah’s) who very kindly sponsored the evening. I would also like to thank the Balsall Heath Archive and Documentation project along with Balsall Heath Carnival for allowing many of us to see so many pictures of people and events in Balsall Heath from yester year. I would also like to thank the Balsall Heath Local History Society for their help and input”.

Comedian, Don Maclean who once lived on Ombersley Road joined the celebrations by saying a few words and radio presenter and historian Carl Chinn MBE was in his element on the evening by adding his wonderful contribution. Carl was quoted as saying “It was a bostin’ evening with so many faces from down The Lane, I’m sure I’m not on my own by saying thank you, Danny Ryan and friends, for making it so special for all of us.’

Danny had arranged for Rachel Smith, Community Film maker to attend the evening to film parts of the evening in readiness for a DVD that is being produced regarding the Balsall Heath Reunion, as well as taking photographs of people.
