Calthorpe School Sports Partnership Football Tournament

On Thursday September 27th Clifton Primary School played host to the first ever Clathorpe School Sports Partnership Football Tournament. The competition which involved local Primary Schools was a 6 a side league system, with each side playing each other once on Clifton’s Astro Turf Pitch.

The competition, which was designed to highlight the talent of young footballers and celebrate fair play saw Christ Church Primary School emerge victorious following a closely contested event. Led by their impressive captain Hassan Haji, Christ Church started with a hard fought 5-3 victory over Chandos Primary, before defeating the home side 4-2, in a match which effectively decided the destiny of the competition.

Despite the disappointment of the loss against Christ Church, Clifton faced Chandos in a match which would determine who finished as runners up. Goals from Levi Henry and Dannayal Iqbal helped Clifton to a 3-0 win and secure second place.

Of greater importance was the fantastic spirit in which the matches were played. This was summed up by the fact that players from all sides actively encouraged the awarding of Fayouz Salem from Chandos as ‘Player of the Tournament.’

The competition is part of a series of tournaments and sporting events planned by the Calthorpe School Sport partnership this year. Owen Lamprey, School Sport Co-ordinator for Calthorpe School and Sports College declared; ‘This was a great opportunity for pupils to compete in a safe and friendly environment against pupils from other schools. It is just part of the work done across the city by the School Sports Partnership to develop young sporting talent and increase participation in Physical Activity.’

Next year’s tournament will be expanded to include schools from across the city of Birmingham, within the School Sport Partnership.
