Al Barakah Bakery

We wanted to see what the girls thought of the food, which they had not really tasted before. The Bakery is owned by Sultan and Abbas and offers a large and varied menu (including vegetarian) at extremely cheap prices. The food is generally not heavily spiced but relies mostly on the natural flavours of the main ingredients. The staff will quite happily talk you through the dishes so you know exactly what it is you are thinking of trying. You can eat in or take away and you can even watch as they cook and prepare the food in the kitchen behind the main counter. It is hard to miss the huge oven to the rear where the bread is freshly cooked all day. This was imported from Lebanon at great expense so that an authentic oven could be used.

The girls gave the food the thumbs up and would definitely all go back again. We filmed our time there and this will form part of an exhibition and film about the area’s culinary heritage.
Girls in Action was formed as part of the Balsall Heath extended schools programme in April 2007. The club was handed over to St Paul’s Youth Service in January 2009. The group seeks to empower young people through confidence building and by raising self-esteem.
The group meets every thursday at 4.30 at St Paul’s Community Development Trust and is for girls aged 11-15yrs.
