A request made by Balsall Heath Children’s Centre parents to have a session for children under five within the school holidays led to the first ‘Balsall Heath Toy Library Stay and Play’ event. Aimed at providing activities to promote creativity, the development of social skills and the chance for the children and parents to spend quality time together made the event a huge success. The session ran for two hours during the recent half term break and saw parents and children having fun playing with a range of resources including play dough, water play, a role play area, construction and musical instruments.

The development of the stay and play event was the result of continuous communication by staff and parents over the lack of resources available for the under fives during the school holidays. One parent said, “It was good to have something to bring children to in the holidays as they are normally bored at home. Toy Library Development Worker Katalya Moxham said of the event, “I am very pleased with the turn out as it was the first of these sessions we have arranged. We aim to have one of these every holiday now having seen how successful they can be”.
