The History Society meeting on March 25th features a talk by John Yates (Genealogist from Birmingham Register Office). John will be talking about the history of Civil Registration in England and Wales with anecdotes and stories to accompany it. Civil Registration started in 1837 and saw the state officially start to record births and deaths for the first time in this country.

Previously baptisms and burials had been the only official record of our “entrance” and departure" in this world. These continued to be recorded by the church as were marriages, which were also picked up under Civil Regiatration.

John is well known and highly regarded amongst genealogists and family historians and this is a talk not to be missed if you are researching your ancestors. The talk is at The Venture on Malvern Street and the doors open at 7pm for a 7:30 start. Non members are welcome at a nominal entrance charge.
