The Society was founded in 1979 with the aim of promoting interest in local history. Over the years the Society has achieved considerable success, working with schools and community groups, organising exhibitions and events, collecting resources and producing its own publications.
The Society is based in The Venture on Malvern Street. It has a part-time Development Worker (Chris Sutton) and has an on-site Archive of memorabilia and artefacts at: Balsall Heath Local History Society.
Recently added is the huge online photo database at: Digital Balsall Heath
There is usually someone in on Mondays to answer queries in person. We also receive many enquiries a week by email about Balsall Heath from those doing their family history.
Contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions you want answering. Image here is of Balsall Heath Panthers cycle speedway on Balsall Heath Road 1954 which was an enquiry about the origins of this team.
The Society is always in the procession for the annual Carnival and has a stall at the event itself. We are keen to support any local or Birmingham wide events whenever possible. We attend the annual Birmingham History Fair (left) as well as regular sessions at Balsall Heath Church Centre.
Amongst out most notable achievements is the run of theatrical productions over the years. The last two were “Sweet Freedom” and “Eclipsed” (left). A new production is being worked on for staging in 2012.
There is a regular monthly meeting at The Venture with guest speakers. More on these can be found on the Society Website
