
International Women’s Day -Views from the Workshops
The morning included two ‘workshop’ sessions in which groups of ten, or so, women had discussion sessions. The themes were: first – the kind of role models women respect, and second -challenges (and solutions to challenges) faced at by women work or in playing a part in society. Everyone present clearly thought these topics were well worth discussing. All the tables were talking, thinking and writing notes energetically. It was difficult to stop the discussions and go on to the next part of the programme.
Good to Share!
One of the main messages coming out of the day was that it was good to share. The value of ‘role models’ for many women was that they were a source of inspiration, and encouragement. They were willing to share their experience and support others. Events like the International Women’s Day celebration help, by providing more examples, more information and more encouragement. Everyone wished there were more opportunities to meet other women and learn from them! People especially admired women who had overcome problems and succeeded against the odds.

Removing the Barriers to Progress
Not surprisingly, groups identified challenges women face in the workplace – or in getting anywhere near it. Those who had jobs found it very hard to deal with colleagues who did not understand the need to look after children, or even to take time off for maternity leave. They found other kinds of prejudice and discrimination around them as well. In talking about solutions, it seemed there was no substitute for talking to fellow workers – including managers – to try and get them to see the problems. If and when this doesn’t work, then Trade Unions, and employers’ policies and procedures many be the answer.
Families – husbands, children, parents – were also a challenge. Many (in a nutshell) just didn’t want women to work, study or train. Again, talking to them was the first recommendation – emphasising the benefit to the family might help! Knowing about part-time, flexi-time, flexible working and other ways of fitting in work and family was useful.
Forging Ahead
Marvellously this was not a ‘more questions than answers’ scenario. Women were on the whole determined and aware of ways to overcome challenges. And they are creating more support networks to help each other have the confidence to meet the challenge. Who knows – we may see the number of women at the top increase eventually, as a result.
