St. Paul's Community Trust

OPNOCS (Older Peoples New Opportunities Consortium)

OPNOCS at the seasideOpnocs is a registered charity that works with older people and older people’s groups/clubs in South Birmingham providing support, advice and information on welfare benefits, housing options and many other issues affecting older people. We arrange regular events, activities and trips throughout the year. We produce a quarterly newsletter advertising events and trips plus articles on other services that may be of benefit to older people.

We aim to:

• Be the main provider of organised events and trips for older people in South Birmingham
• Be a caring home visiting and telephone service for isolated people in South Birmingham.
• Provide access to information on the prevention of falls, strokes, dementia and other long term illnesses.
• Provide access to information and light exercise that enable people to live independently at home

Telling Tales

Regularly throughout the year Opnocs, in partnership with Yardley Wood Library, introduces a local author, poet or historian to give a talk. All are welcome to attend listen, and participate.

Events and Trips

Every month we arrange an event or a trip. Events are designed to promote health and well-being issues. These events and trips offer people the chance to get out and about, widen their social network and make new friends.

Volunteer home visiting and telephone befriending service

This service is for people in the Moseley, Balsall Heath, Kings Heath, Hall Green, Yardley Wood, Billesley and Brandwood areas who feel isolated and lonely. We provide opportunities to make new friends which helps to reduce stress and depression. Referrals are accepted from GP’s, health professionals, social workers, family and other appropriate sources.

Signposting

If we are unable to deal directly with an issue the enquiry is signposted to an alternative service provider. The referral is monitored by Opnocs to ensure that that case is dealt with to the satisfaction of the enquirer.

You will receive support and training, and travel expenses can be claimed.

A CRB check will be undertaken for which you will not pay and you will be required to give details of two references.
